Despite Israel permitting aid trucks into Gaza, the United Nations reports that no supplies have reached civilians due to access restrictions, intensifying global calls for humanitarian relief.
Aid Trucks Enter Gaza, But Supplies Remain Undistributed
On Tuesday, 93 aid trucks carrying essential supplies such as flour, baby food, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals crossed into Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing. However, the UN states that none of these supplies have been distributed to civilians. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric explained that their team waited for hours for Israeli clearance to access the area but were unable to transport the supplies to UN warehouses.
Dujarric described the situation as “a drop in the ocean of what’s needed,” emphasizing the complexity of the aid operation due to Israeli requirements for offloading and reloading supplies within Gaza. UN agencies estimate that approximately 600 trucks per day are necessary to address Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.
Escalating Conflict and Civilian Casualties
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties. According to the Hamas-run Civil Defence service, 15 people, including a child, were killed in Israeli airstrikes since midnight local time on Wednesday. These attacks have further strained the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
International Community Responds
Global leaders have expressed increasing concern over the situation in Gaza. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the suspension of trade talks with Israel, labeling the military escalation as “morally unjustifiable” and the situation as “intolerable.” Similarly, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that the bloc would review its trade agreement with Israel in response to its actions in Gaza.
Urgent Need for Humanitarian Relief
The UN continues to advocate for immediate and unrestricted access to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilian population. Despite the arrival of aid trucks, the lack of distribution underscores the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
