Russia intensifies aerial assault on Ukraine’s northeast, hitting civilians
In a fresh wave of attacks, Russian airstrikes targeted Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv, leaving two civilians dead and at least 28 others injured, local officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The strikes struck central and residential parts of Kharkiv, a city already reeling from weeks of bombardment. According to Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Syniehubov, several homes, shops, and civilian infrastructure were damaged in the assault, which reportedly involved guided aerial bombs.
Hospitals overwhelmed by wounded
Emergency responders worked through the night to rescue survivors from the rubble. Video footage from the scene shows debris-strewn streets, shattered windows, and scorched buildings. Rescue teams and medics rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals, where some patients remain in critical condition.
Syniehubov described the situation as “dire,” and warned residents to stay in shelters and avoid public places. “The enemy continues to terrorize the civilian population. We are doing everything possible to save lives,” he said.
Russia’s northern offensive intensifies
The renewed strike on Kharkiv comes amid a broader Russian push in Ukraine’s northeastern border regions, particularly in Kharkiv and Sumy. Moscow has launched frequent drone and missile attacks as part of its summer offensive.
In recent weeks, Russia has ramped up its efforts in the region, attempting to break through Ukrainian defenses and destabilize cities close to the border. While Ukraine has repelled multiple ground assaults, the relentless air attacks have taken a heavy toll on civilians and infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, calling them “terrorist acts against innocent people.” He urged international allies to provide more air defense systems to protect Ukrainian cities from aerial threats.
Global concerns grow
The attack has sparked fresh concerns among international observers. The United Nations has reiterated calls for both sides to prioritize the safety of civilians and uphold humanitarian laws.
Meanwhile, millions of residents across Ukraine live under the constant threat of missile and drone attacks, with many cities implementing stricter curfews and shelter protocols.
